Who are
we?Formerly known as Environ, we became Groundwork Leicester & Leicestershire in 2006 by joining the national Groundwork Federation. However, we have a long track record, going back to 1983, of pioneering environmental action.
We were instrumental in Leicester being designated as Britain's first Environment City and continue today to develop innovative sustainable solutions, many of which are replicated across Britain and beyond. We have a workforce of over 60 professional staff, supplemented by committed volunteers, trainees and work placements.
We pursue an ethos of partnership in all that we do, engaging with government bodies, businesses and local communities to involve everyone in action for the future. As well as covering Leicester and Leicestershire, our remit also embraces Rutland.

Our head office is a refurbished school in Western Park, Leicester, fitted with numerous environmental features, and adjacent to the EcoHouse show-home. We also operate from a number of other bases located across the city and county. We strive to develop opportunities for community participation, youth inclusion and training and employment in most that we do. Several of our operations are social enterprises; offering professional services and run as businesses but with all profits used by the charity to further its work.
We focus on what we can all do now, recognising that no-one can do everything but everyone can do something. We believe the very act of doing something positive, however small, lifts the spirit and brings hope for the future (see our Mission and Aims).
Life at Groundwork Leicester & Leicestershire is full of change. We constantly seek new and ever-more effective ways of helping people lessen their impact on the environment, starting right here at our offices. Our premises in Leicester (How to Find Us) feature several environmental features and practices and policies reflect our environmental ethos (Practising What We Preach).
