It is not enough to talk the environmental message, we have to learn to live by it.
At Groundwork Leicester & Leicestershire we try to practice what we preach and adopt the best environmental and ethical practice we can. Parkfield, our main office in Leicester is an ex-school refurbished on green principles and has many environmental features, from a living roof to a compost toilet.
All the electricity we use is generated from renewable sources. We recycle more than 80% of our waste, re-use paper and envelopes, and foster energy efficient habits.
In 2003 we installed a rainwater recycling system which collects rain from our roof in a large tank buried under our garden. Filtered water from the tank is automatically fed to all toilets and used for flushing. We estimate this will save around 40% of our water needs.
Around our office building we've created a pond, a wildflower meadow and planted hundreds of native trees and shrubs. We encourage cycling and the use of public transport for work travel and increasingly use information technology to avoid travelling to meetings.
In recognition of this commitment to practicing what we preach we have received ISO14001-2004 certification for our Environmental Management System. In working to achieve this certification we have improved our environmental policy, identified our significant environmental impacts and put in place a series of objectives, targets, policies and procedures to enable us to manage our interaction with the environment more effectively.
